Understanding the Canada Student Grants for Students with Disabilities For Post-Secondary Students

The Canadian government offers financial aid to help post-secondary students overcome financial barriers and create a more equitable learning environment. Two key federal programs are particularly relevant: the Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities (CSG-D) and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE). These grants provide crucial financial support for students with disabilities.

Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities (CSG-D):

The Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities CSG-D provides funding for students who experience disabilities or medical-related barriers to learning. It is meant to offset the cost of attending post-secondary for students with disabilities. This grant, available annually, provides eligible students with $2800 for the 2024-2025 academic year. This funding can be used at your discretion and may reduce or eliminate the need for student loans.

Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE)

The Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE) for students with disabilities provides financial assistance for disability-related services and equipment necessary for full participation in post-secondary educational programs. This grant is available to students with disabilities for each academic year of studies. Eligible students can receive up to $20,000 per academic year in funding to cover the cost of specialized services and equipment.

Services covered by the CSG-DSE include funding for a specialized tutor, academic strategy sessions, note-taking support, a reader, typist, behaviour coach, and education interventionist/strategist, among others.

Equipment covered by the CSG-DSE includes various assistive technologies such as digital recorders, smart pens/reader pens, assistive listening devices (FM Systems, headphones), voice recognition software, text-to-speech software, assistive writing software, organizational mapping software, note-taking and lecture recording devices as well as computers and associated technologies.

Navigating the Funding Application Process: A Guided Approach

The Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities (CSG-D) and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment (CSG-DSE) are available to post-secondary students with disabilities. Students wishing to access these grants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Students must be eligible for a Canada Student Loan: Students must apply for and qualify for a Canada Student Loan through their province or territory.
  2. Students must be enrolled in a designated post-secondary program: Applicants must be enrolled in a part-time or full-time program at a designated post-secondary institution.
  3. Students must have verification of disability. To apply for the grant, students must provide documentation such as verification of disability, medical certificate,  educational-psychological assessment, ADHD assessment, etc.

MyLearningCoach supports students who are experiencing barriers to learning in accessing educational-psychological assessments, ADHD assessments, mental health assessments, and Autism assessments that are needed to access the Canada Student Grant for Students with Disabilities and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment.

Applying for the CSG-D  and the CSG-DSE can sometimes feel overwhelming for students. The application process is different for each provincial/territorial student aid program and often involves multiple forms, deadlines, and requirements. MyLearningCoach aims to make the application process more attainable for post-secondary students by working closely with the student and the accessibility office at the school the student attends to complete the application.
