Learning Coach

Derek is an experienced educator with over 15 years of teaching across a variety of subject areas and educational settings. He holds a Bachelor of Secondary Education from the University of Alberta and has worked in private IB schools, public schools, and under-resourced schools internationally. These diverse experiences have shaped his flexible, culturally responsive approach to supporting learners.

Derek has extensive experience providing educational support and mentoring students across a range of ages and skill levels. His work is grounded in relationship-building, confidence development, and helping students recognize and build on their strengths.

In addition to his classroom experience, Derek has spent over a decade working with Westcoast Connection’s teen touring programs, serving as a leader, director, and supervisor. Through volunteer service and global adventure programs, he has supported young people from around the world in developing independence, leadership skills, and global awareness.

Based in Vancouver, BC, Derek is passionate about supporting neurodivergent learners, strengthening executive functioning skills, and advancing equity in education. He is committed to helping post-secondary students build the skills, strategies, and self-awareness needed to thrive academically and beyond. Outside of his professional work, he enjoys staying active, travelling, and spending time in the mountains and by the ocean.
