Here are five helpful study tips specifically designed to support post-secondary students with ADHD:

  1. Create a Study Schedule – Organize your study time by spacing out sessions and sticking to a consistent routine.
  2. Put Your Phone Away – Reduce distractions by setting your phone to ‘do not disturb’ and leaving it in another room.
  3. Listen to Your Notes – Give your eyes a break by reading your notes aloud, recording them, and listening to the recordings on repeat. You can also use text-to-speech software for digital notes.
  4. Get Creative with Colour – Make your learning more visual by using bright pens to create colourful mindmaps or highlighting key concepts.
  5. Try the Pomodoro Technique – Set a timer for 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break to manage time effectively.

These strategies can help manage distractions, enhance focus, and improve retention, making studying with ADHD more manageable and effective.

Students with ADHD can access a variety of accommodations in university to help manage their academic responsibilities more effectively. Common accommodations include extended time on exams, a quiet testing environment, note-taking assistance, and permission to use recording devices during lectures. Some students may also receive accommodations for flexible assignment deadlines or the ability to take exams in a distraction-free space. Access to assistive technology, such as organizational apps or text-to-speech software, may also be provided. These accommodations are designed to level the playing field and ensure that students with ADHD can fully demonstrate their knowledge and abilities. To receive accommodations, students must typically register with their university’s disability services office and provide documentation of their ADHD diagnosis.
